Concert Band’s final recital

The Monmouth College Concert Band held its last recital of the semester on Monday, April 16, 2007, in the Kasch Performance Hall of the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.

The band was led by Steve Richter, director of instrumental activities, with assistance from student conductors on several of the pieces.

The Concert Band is part of a course offered by the music department. It is open to anyone with an interest, no audition required.

In the fall, the group performs as a marching band, cheering on the Fighting Scots football team and marching in a number of local parades; the second semester is then dedicated solely to concert music.

The group is comprised of approximately 30 individuals who get together once a week for practice, which one member describes as “laid-back” and “fun.”

Monday’s concert showcased a full program of songs. Music majors in the band logged in some additional conducting practice on three of the songs: freshmen Melissa Lindsay and Timothy Seyller on “March of the Heralds” and “Klezmer Carnaval,” respectively, and freshman Alex Dane and junior Heather West on separate movements of the “Capriol Suite.”

The band proved its resourcefulness when it succeeded in arranging very little rehearsal time and a great deal of music into an exceptional performance. Comradery and enthusiasm certainly go a long way for this group of musicians.
