Each year, Greek Week is filled with events supporting unity of all Greek parties across campus. Penny wars, games and a Greek Week show are staples of the week’s program. Several members of the Greek community contribute their favorite experiences during Greek Week each year.
Erik Hoffer, a junior member of Alpha Tau Omega shares his favorite memories of Greek Week.
“My favorite memories are being part of ATO winning the past two years when it has come down to the last event to decide the Greek Week champs. I look forward to the athletic competitions each year because I am very competitive. The games are always so much fun and it’s nice to be able to get paired up with each sorority in different events. I really think that ATO can pull out a 3-peat championship this year. After winning the past two years, it would be great to keep the streak alive and I believe we stand a chance of doing just that.”
Junior Pi Beta Phis Lindsey Nissen and Jill Springsteen have been gearing up for the events this week. Their favorite memories of Greek Week in previous years have been working with other groups and getting to know new people. Springsteen added she looks forward most to the shows each year just because everyone looks so silly and everyone has so much fun being so ridiculous.
Senior Sigma Phi Epsilon Nick Raes also enjoys looking back on his Greek Week memories.
“My favorite memory is during my freshmen year when we had to scramble to make a banner so we put a huge picture of Matt Hawkins on a sheet that read ‘Greek Week Is Fatty!’”
Senior Kappa Kappa Gamma Hilary Hawkinson also looks forward to the Greek Week show each year.
“My favorite is definitely the show, every year, but especially my sophomore year when we were with ATO and did the infamous Vegas kick line. Those long practices were tough, but so fun and so worth it,” Hawkinson said. She also added she loves yelling Kappa songs at the top of her lungs after the show each year as well and of course she predicts them to win this year.
Senior Alpha Xi Delta Sarah Pickrel also looks back on her years as a Greek.
“I’ve enjoyed meeting the new members in each chapter and seeing everyone come together for the same cause – fun! I would say my favorite part every year is the games. I also like how the games are in public areas so everyone can see that we’re Greek and we’re having fun. I really think it shows the campus who we are. I think it’s a good recruitment tool to get us into the public eye so others can see what they’re missing out on and possibly want to join.”
Junior ATO David Gerth also looks forward to Greek Week each year.
“My favorite memory is learning everything as a new member. I never really knew what Greek Week was and to be thrown into something so overwhelming was an interesting feeling. Greeks sometimes get a bad reputation, but I think that this week is a reminder to many of us about the responsibilities and privileges we receive as Greeks.”
With so many activities and events to attend each year, Greek Week’s
purpose is to bring the Greek population at Monmouth College
together each year. Although the week is filled with competitive
spirit, it is also a reminder that everyone is united through their
Greek affiliations. Winners of the week will be announced tonight at
the annual Greek Week banquet.
