There is nothing
like the comfort of family, and this past weekend Monmouth College
showed its respect to the families of students during the annual
Family Weekend festivities across campus.
Beginning on Friday,
Sept. 28, the festivities included a meal in the Stockdale Center,
a volleyball game in the Huff Athletic Center and a musical
concert put on by the campus music department. The concert
included singing by the Sound of Five (Monmouth College’s very own
a cappella group) and instrumental ensembles by a number of
students. It was directed by both Carolyn Suda, the director of
the college’s string program, and Stephen Richter, director of
instrumental activities. Following the concert was a performance
by inPulse, a visiting a cappella group, sponsored by the
Association for Student Activity Programming (ASAP).
Saturday, Sept. 29
proved to be the main day of events for the weekend. All three
sororities on campus held their open-houses throughout the day,
and the sports teams that had home games provided entertainment
for those families interested.
Some might argue
that the highlight of the weekend for family members was the
all-campus cookout and the ASAP events, including a mechanical
bull, obstacle course, outdoor slide, moonwalk, gladiator joust
and bouncy boxing. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the quad that students
walk through to get to classes every day was filled with these
inflatable and fun toys to entertain students and their families.
Sophomore Amanda
Cozzi stated, “My favorite part of Family Weekend was the lunch in
the quad and hanging out with my family, especially going through
the obstacle course with my sisters.” Sophomore Megan Thornburg
said, “My mom and I had a blast. We raced in the obstacle course
and I kicked her butt. We also got to bond over a nice Applebees
dinner. I love my mom.”
After a nice dinner
with the families, the students on campus were encouraged to come
back to campus to enjoy a magic show by performer Kevin Hurley.
Audience members noted that Hurley was very funny and kept them
engaged in all of his tricks. The show gave the students and their
families one more thing to bond over while the Family Weekend
events began to wind down.
Generally speaking,
the families involved seemed to all agree that this year’s Family
Weekend was a success.
