On Wednesday, Oct.
10, a Monmouth College student, returning from a town bar, was
approached by two men outside of the College Admission Office at
the corner of Sixth Street and Broadway.
The student said
that security had been in the area but was supplying a female
student with an escort back to Founders Village at the time that
the male student was approached by the two men.
The two assailants
then demanded the student’s “Mother f-ing wallet.” The student
hesitated for only a moment and then took off running.
The student ran
toward Bowers Hall. He rounded the east side of Bowers before
finally entering the north door, which faces The New Residence
Hall.
Before entering
the building, the student looked to see if he was followed but
saw no evidence that the pair had followed him. He then entered
the building and made head resident of Bowers, senior Matt
Henning, aware of the incident.
Kathy Wagoner,
associate director of residence life, said, “We feel that this
was an isolated incident dealing with an off-campus person. We
do not feel that there is a real threat to the safety of
Monmouth College students on campus.”
Wagoner also
commented that the descriptions of both the events and
assailants were handed over to both Monmouth College security
force as well as the city’s police department.
The student also
mentioned that he talked to a detective about the situation.
According to the
student, he was able to enter Bowers Hall quicker, thanks to the
newly installed keyless entry system.
Wagoner said, “One
of the reasons we installed the key cards was for added
security.”
Extra security
will also be present over Homecoming weekend to ensure the
safety of students and visitors.
Since the event on
Oct. 10, there have been no further reports of mugging attempts
on or near campus.
