Going into their Oct. 21 match against Lake Forest College, Monmouth’s women’s soccer squad needed to win their remaining three conference games to have any chance at making the Midwest Conference playoffs.

Their playoff hopes were shattered earlier than expected, however, as Lake Forest beat the Scots 1-0 in the closely fought contest in Monmouth. After the match, the Scots dropped to a 3-2-2 conference record, and 7-6-3 overall.

The game was scoreless until the 63rd minute when Lake Forest netted the only goal of the day. Monmouth has been in many close games recently and they have played well, especially considering how young the team is.

The Scots earned an undefeated record in the four games prior to the Lake Forest match, with a 2-0-2 mark during that span. On Oct. 6, MC tied St. Norbert 3-3 in a game that went into two overtimes. The next day the Scots earned yet another tie in a double-overtime match against Lawrence College, 1-1. In their final non-conference contest of the season on Oct.14, the Scots defeated Cornell College 2-1.

Monmouth kept their playoff hopes alive when they shutout Beloit College on Oct. 20, 2-0. In their match against Beloit, neither team scored in the first half, but the Scots netted a goal early in the second half, scored by freshman Becca Baur. The Scots struck again with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, as sophomore Tina Rohrback scored her first goal of the season.

Both goals were scored off corner-kicks, and freshman Megan Meeke was credited with assists on each play. Meeke has played exceptional soccer during her first season at Monmouth College. She is second on the team in goals scored, with six, and first in assists, with five. For her efforts, Meeke was name Midwest Conference Performer of the Week on Oct. 2.

The Scots will conclude their season this weekend with conference matches on the road against Ripon College on Oct. 27 and Carroll College on Oct. 28. Kick-off time is 11 a.m. for both matches.
