As the men’s
soccer team looks ahead to their two games over Homecoming
weekend, Oct. 26-28, they hope to take their experiences from
this past weekend and get back on track, in hopes of ending the
season with two wins.
On Saturday, Oct.
20, the Monmouth College men’s soccer team (3-9-3) lost to
Beloit College (5-9-0) at home by a score of 2-1. Sophomore
defender, Bryan Jackson, supplied the Fighting Scots with their
only goal. An unfortunate trend continued in this game, as the
Fighting Scots struggled to get many shots on goal.
While MC got six
shots on goal, Beloit College managed to get double that, making
12 shots on goal. Fighting Scots’ sophomore, Owen Robinson, said
he was pleased about some aspects of the games over the weekend.
Robinson stated, “I
think our team played pretty good soccer this weekend. We were
doing everything or mostly everything we need to do, but
sometimes the ball doesn’t go in the right goal.” The Fighting
Scots had another game to look ahead to, as they prepared to
play their second game of the weekend against Lake Forest on
Sunday, Oct. 21.
Finishing out the
weekend of home games, on Sunday, Oct. 21, the Fighting Scots
lost to Lake Forest by a score of 2-1 in double overtime. Lake
Forest’s Ben Levy scored early in the first half, and the Scots
were forced to show proof of their potential offensive power.
Fortunately for the Fighting Scots, sophomore Patrick Blazer
scored a goal in the second half to tie Lake Forest 1-1.
The game went into
multiple overtimes where both teams failed to score a goal; but,
during the second overtime, Lake Forest’s Levy scored what would
be the final goal, and the Scots could not retaliate with
another score.
The Scots hope to
end their season in a sound fashion with two wins over
Homecoming weekend. They travel to Ripon College on Saturday,
Oct. 27 and then make their way to Carroll College on Sunday,
Oct. 28. Jackson echoed these sentiments, stating: “These last
two games are conference games and we would like to get two
wins.” Jackson also hopes that the team will recognize its
ability, and “play as a team, the way we’re capable of playing,
and cut out the mental mistakes that we sometimes make we can
get this accomplished.”
This is a feeling
presumably shared by each member of the Fighting Scots as they
try to finish out the season with two conference victories. A
strong finish would strengthen the team’s outlook for next
year’s season.
