The students of
Monmouth College’s department of political science are restarting
the previously dormant Alpha Alpha Iota chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha,
the National Political Science Honor Society. For membership into
the Society, Monmouth College students “must be at least juniors
who have completed ten semester-credits of work in political
science including at least one upper-division course, with an
average grade of ‘B’ or higher in those courses,” according to Pi
Sigma Alpha’s national eligibility requirements. Additionally, all
members must be in the top one-third of their whole class. The
Society promotes the study of political science in undergraduate
institutions and recognizes students for excellence in the field.
In keeping with Pi
Sigma Alpha’s desire to promote political science, the Monmouth
College Alpha Alpha Iota chapter will be working throughout the
academic year to foster awareness of issues on Monmouth’s campus.
To further open and free discourse on campus regarding issues of
politics, culture and society, Pi Sigma Alpha will be contributing
articles throughout the course of the academic year. Articles will
discuss and debate relevant, contemporary issues in America and
the world in the hope that students will form their own opinions
regarding the issues, and that the campus will benefit from an
open and free discussion of sometimes very controversial topics.
In addition, Pi Sigma Alpha will host discussions and other events
to bring students together to discuss issues.
In order to hold
larger events and activities, Pi Sigma Alpha has become a member
of the organization Monmouth College Political Action Committee (MCPAC),
an umbrella organization encompassing the political, cultural and
social groups on campus. As a MCPAC member, Pi Sigma Alpha will
cosponsor biweekly movie showings at the Peterson Hall Theater. Pi
Sigma Alpha is also planning larger events in conjunction with
MCPAC organizations. For instance, Pi Sigma Alpha will be
cosponsoring with other MCPAC groups a panel discussion on
abortion in America toward the end of November.
Monmouth College’s
reenergized Alpha Alpha Iota chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha will be
working hard this academic year to cultivate free and open
discourse regarding political issues on campus by publishing
articles that discuss controversial issues and by cosponsoring
activities through MCPAC.
