The Fighting Scot’s men and women’s swim team started their season this past Friday, Oct. 26 with a dual meet against Millikin University. The men’s team won the meet with a final score of 125 to 80.

This year, the men’s team is made up of 19 men, up from 17 last year. To break-in the new season, freshman Kevin Raske broke two school records; first, in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:03.88 and then again in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:53.12.

Strong efforts were also made by sophomore Harrison Heilman  in the 200 yard individual medley, sophomore John Peterson in the 100 yard backstroke and sophomore John Kaiser in the 50 yard freestyle. Senior Kurt Niemeier finished first in the 100 yard freestyle, and coach Keith Crawford claimed to be “Very impressed with his [Niemeier] effort and time of 59.3 for the first meet of the year.”

The men’s team is gearing to be a top competitor in the conference, dominating Grinell College. Grinell has won conference in the men’s division the last six years in a row and the women’s for the last nine years. The women’s team is also looking forward to their season, finishing the meet with an 80 to 119.5 finish.

Sophomore Anne Lane,  “Did a very tough triple of the 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard individual medley, and the 100 yard butterfly and finishing first in all three,” says Crawford.

He went on to say: “She put in quite a bit of effort.”  Senior Heather Plum also finished first in the women’s 1000 yard freestyle with a strong time of 11:57.17. This is also the start of the first men and women’s dive team since 1981.

The dive competitors started their season against Western Illinois University on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Western.

Sophomore Jack Clifford and freshman Nina Hart will also help the Scots work towards their goal of a top two finish for the men and a top four finish for the women in conference this year. With eleven competition days and the conference meet to come, Crawford is, “Looking forward to another successful year. I know we are working harder than ever before and have a lot more talent than ever before.”

The Scots’ next meet is this Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Pepper Natatorium against Lake Forest College.
