The Monmouth College
women’s basketball team hopes to dominate their competition during
the 2007-08 season. The Scots’ first game will be at Cornell
College on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Last week, the
Scots had a scrimmage against McMurray College, and they set the
tone for the season, as they went on to annihilate their
opponent.
According to junior
Melissa Gorski, “The game was an absolute massacre. The scrimmage
was to prepare us for Saturday, and we are going to be ready for
Cornell.” The experienced Scots will be ready for the season
opener, as they have four returning starters from last year’s
team. Monmouth will also suit up many freshmen this season.
“We have a lot of
good incoming freshmen who add depth to our bench,” stated Gorski.
The Scots’ newest
additions to the team include freshmen Alison Andrews, Justine
Boone, Hope Grebner, Jennifer Hess, Kim Howard, Erica Puig and
Niki Sue Williams.
Returning players
for the Scots include: sophomores Lynsey Barnard, Megan Baum,
Courtney Dolezil, Kelly Sheets and Elise Waldorf and juniors
Melissa Gorski, Katie Sheets, Tanesha Hughes and Apryl Wishecoby.
The Scots’ lone
senior, Ashley Yeast, hopes to continue the success she had last
year, when she averaged a double-double with points and rebounds.
In addition to her 12.5 points-per-game, Yeast led the nation in
rebounding with 13.7 each outing.
Yeast and Gorski
were named to the Midwest Conference all-conference team last
year.
Although the team is
returning many contributors from last year, Laura Jahn graduated
after having four great seasons with the Scots and averaging 14.7
points-per-game in 2006-07.
Melissa Jones, head
coach of the Scots and a 2003 Monmouth College graduate, is
starting her third year as coach. Assistant coaches include, Molly
McNamara, third year; Gary Martin, fourth year and, newest
addition, John Van Kirk.
The Scots are
hoping their freshmen will provide a spark and give the team more
depth, enabling them to earn a better record than their 12-11 mark
in 2006-07. “This year we are deeper, we have players off the
bench who can score for us,” stated Gorski.
The team is excited
for the season opener against Cornell. “Saturday will tell us
where we are are, which will prepare us for a long season,” added
Gorski.
The Scots have been
practicing hard and hope to maintain their stamina throughout the
season. “Coach Jones has prepared us for Saturday, it is now up to
us to take what she has taught us and put it into action,” stated
Gorski.
