The rebounding queen
The Monmouth women's basketball team is off to a fast start this season, with a 4-2 record. They are looking to continue their success as the season progresses.

The women’s basketball team defeated Grinnell College 83-64 on Wednesday, Dec. 5, bringing the Scots to a 4-2 overall record on the season and a 2-1 conference record.

Junior Melissa Gorski and sophomore Elise Waldorf led the team’s offense, as Gorski scored a game-high 22 points in addition to 13 rebounds; Waldorf added 16 points. Senior Ashley Yeast recorded a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Coach Melissa Jones says the team is playing great so far.

Last year, the Scots finished sixth in conference, and this year they are expected to place fourth but are hoping to place higher.

Junior Tanesha Hughes said, “I think our team has a lot of potential and desire to be that Conference championship team, and we’re working our way up there.” Over winter break, the varsity team will travel to Los Angeles to play in a tournament hosted by Chaplain University.

They will play two games, one against Chaplain and the other against Augustana.  Sight-seeing and team-bonding are also on the agenda for the California trip, as the girls know without teamwork there is no team.

Hughes also commented, “We are so close off of the court and we get along so well it’s like we’re sisters. We bring that closeness on the court and play together as a team, improving every game.”

Yeast is the only senior on the team, and she has made the season a memorable one already by breaking a 16-year-old school record for career rebounds. She says the rebounding record was a personal challenge, but she was not concerned about the record. When she broke the record, she did not even realize it, but says the feeling is unreal. However, Yeast’s goals for the season focus on the team.

She said, “I believe this year we have the full package-inside game and outside game. As long as all five players make themselves a threat when on the court, I believe we are unstoppable.”

The Scots next Midwest Conference game is against Lake Forest College on Jan. 8.
