Many of you may
have noticed a band of roving Scotsmen traversing the Monmouth
College campus this past week. No, not the battle-ax wielding kind
featured in “Braveheart,” these Scotsmen have a different weapon
of choice – their songs.
This past week, a
campus a cappella group known as – you guessed it – the Scotsmen
delivered singing valentines to unsuspecting sweethearts. Students
and faculty alike enlisted the services of these singers, and,
based on word of mouth reactions, the guys did not disappoint.
The group consists
of 11 male singers: seniors Matt Henning (bass), Brian “Big Red”
Jordan (bass), Don Trinite (baritone), Nathan Faith (baritone),
Erik Davis (tenor II) and Jess Miller (tenor I); junior Brian Rowe
(tenor I); and freshmen Nick Munson (baritone), Dane Feenstra
(tenor II), Andrew Watson (tenor I) and Jonathan Snowdon (tenor
II).
The group began
advertising their services around a week before Valentine’s Day.
According to Davis, “When we started advertising, we thought we
would get around five to ten requests; but, as it turned out, the
campus response was much greater than we anticipated. We ended up
spending all of our free time singing.”
He continued, “It
became hard to get all of our homework done, but it was still a
lot of fun for all of us.”
While the
Scotsmen’s special valentines were a big hit, there are other
endeavors they are currently pursuing. In order to legitimize
themselves, the group drafted a constitution in a bid to become an
officially recognized Monmouth College student organization. After
several constitutional revisions, the group was passed through the
ASMC (Associated Students of Monmouth College) and just recently
through the Faculty Student Affairs Committee.
While the group is
optimistic about these new possibilities, there is still one more
obstacle to overcome. The group’s constitution will be voted on by
the Faculty Senate next week. The group has also expressed an
interest in helping a female a cappella group start up on campus
if interest arises.
So, if two weeks
from now you hear the soulful stylings and vocal harmonies of your
favorite on-campus a cappella group, the verdict is in, and the
news is good.
For now, show your
support for the Scotsmen by spreading the word and appealing to
the faculty and administration on their behalf. So that their
voices can be heard in the future, let your voices be heard.
