Anthony Atkins is
a senior physical education, secondary education major. Home for
Anthony is Pawnee, Ill.
Atkins is involved
both here at Monmouth and in the surrounding area. He is playing
baseball this season, as he has every year but one, and is also a
member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He walks dogs at the Knox
County Animal Shelter, and is helping out with the Senior Citizens
Prom in Stronghurst Ill.
Anthony’s favorite
professors are Ken McMillan and Susan Holm. He said of McMillan,
“He taught us about things that are truly useful outside of
class.” He had Professor Holm his freshman year for Spanish. “Holm
did a great job of making a foreign language fun and exciting. I
think that that has to be really tough.”
On top of these
professors, Anthony wanted to speak about his relationship with
the physical education department. He was so glad to get to work
with them. “The whole department really does care about the
department’s students. They always take the extra step to see how
you are doing and to ask about your classes.”
Anthony’s favorite
class was English composition with professor Roberts. “First,” he
claimed, “I got an A in the class, and, second, we got to watch
and write on several Alfred Hitchcock films, which was a first
time experience for me.”
After graduation,
Atkins will be student teaching in the Chicagoland area. When he
is finished with that, he hopes to get a job as a physical
education teacher and coach at the high school level. He only
hopes that he gets a job somewhere in the state, and would prefer
to coach Baseball.
When it comes to
missing Monmouth, Anthony will miss his Monmouth College email
account if it gets cancelled. He will also miss the opportunity to
stay up late at night playing video games, especially Halo. He
will also greatly miss seeing people that he has grown accustomed
to seeing everyday and all of his friends.
Anthony’s fondest
memories of being here at school are sophomore year, building an 8
foot snowman with Ryne Tate and Mark Mullaney. As well as winning
the Think Fast campus game show last year, where he won 200
dollars.
Ryne Tate, a good
friend of Atkins’, had this to say, “Anthony is always good for a
laugh. The man takes everything in stride and keeps his head up.
I’ve never known a person who has made an ‘A’ look so easy. Sports
enthusiasts would be challenged to approach Anthony’s mass of
knowledge. He is going to be a great teacher and coach.”
Anthony’s
girlfriend commented on her boyfriend, “Anthony is a great guy who
is extremely passionate about sports. Whether it’s a video game,
re-runs of past sport games, or current games, he is obsessed. I
say that like it’s a bad thing. It’s not. It’s just something that
he loves and is passionate about.”
She continues,
“in addition to sports, Anthony loves music. No matter what song
is on the radio, he can probably start singing along. Regardless
if the band is of his normal emo fashion, he can sing it and name
the artist. It’s an amazing ability that baffles me to no end. He
is also very passionate about sports and trivia, but he still
remains focused on his friends and family.”
