Book fair: great books, good buys

Young bookworms of Monmouth, prepare for a fresh batch of literary adventures! For the past two weeks, the Kappa Delta Pi education honor society has been hosting a children’s book fair, in the hope of using proceeds from their sales to provide books to local libraries and schools. The final opportunity to visit the book fair will be Friday, Feb. 29, from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Featuring a wide selection of products from the Scholastic publishing company, the book fair has been operating in the lower level of Stockdale Center since Monday, Feb. 18. All items are sold just at or below the publisher’s normal asking price. The book fair has been a consistent program, sponsored annually by Kappa Delta Pi.

In addition, the book fair temporarily moved to a new location on Wednesday, Feb. 27, when Kappa Delta Pi hosted its book fair family night. This event allowed children and their guardians to peruse through and buy selections, and the night featured a live appearance by Clifford the Big Red Dog, the beloved illustrated icon of author Norman Bridwell’s popular children’s book series.

According to Molly Rhoderick, junior and president of Kappa Delta Pi, sales this year have been rather successful, having currently pulled in more than $1,500 in total profits. Once all profits have been collected and totaled, the group will then use that money toward purchasing an assortment of the books left over from the book fair’s merchandise, which will then be donated to libraries and schools in the area to maintain in their permanent collections.
