Monmouth tennis practices hard
The Scots tennis program has been improving in recent years and this season will likely be one of the most successful seasons in school history.

The Monmouth College men’s tennis team continued their solid play when they recorded two wins on Feb. 23 against Illinois Wesleyan University and Quincy University.

The Scots dominated both matches, as they beat Illinois Wesleyan 8-1 and trumped Quincy 7-2.

Both matches were played in Monmouth, and they were the first home competitions of the season for the Scots.

Monmouth improved to 4-2 on the season after their first two home games, and they appear to be poised to make a run at their first conference title since 1938.

The team’s success is not because of one athlete in particular, as the Scots have a deep team that is solid at every spot.

Junior Kyle Korb has been competing at the No. 1 singles spot this year, and he is beginning to adjust to playing against the opponent’s best player. He has posted a 2-4 record overall this season.

Senior Kevin Kamenjarin is etched in at the No. 2 singles spot, and he has earned an impressive 4-2 mark in the young season.

Going into this season, Kamenjarin was Monmouth’s all-time leader in wins for doubles competition; Korb and Kamenjarin team up to comprise Monmouth’s No. 1 doubles team this year, and they have been victorious in all but one of their six matches this season.

Senior Matt Moser is competing at No. 3 singles for the Scots, while freshman Sam Graf holds the No. 4 spot. Graf has played exceptionally over his first six college matches, earning a 4-2 record.

Rounding out the Scots’ lineup is junior Eric Brandhorst at No. 5 singles and freshman Ben Morrow at No. 6. Morrow is also playing well early in his collegiate career, posting a 5-1 record.

Moser and Morrow join to compose the No. 2 doubles team for the Scots, while Brandhorst and Graf serve as the No. 3 doubles squad.

In their game against Illinois Weseleyan, Monmouth flexed its muscles, as every match, excluding the No. 1 singles competition, was won by the Scots.

Monmouth also performed at a high level against Quincy, winning each match except for No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles.

The Scots will continue their season on March 1 when they host Cornell College, who Monmouth annihilated 9-0 last season.

The Scots will start Midwest Conference play on March 29 when they host Ripon College and Lawrence University.
