Monmouth College’s
intramural program has officially been rejuvenated, as tournaments
have drawn high participation, and the Field House in the Huff
Athletic Center has been full of students competing in various
events.
The program’s
growth is due mostly to the efforts of George Perry, who became
the Director of Intramurals at the beginning of the 2006-07
academic school year.
“I think we’re
heading in the right direction, but we still have a long way to
go,” Perry said. “Communicating with students through email for
registration has helped out a lot.”
Currently a
volleyball league is being played every Monday and Wednesday
night. Perry said that 21 teams have signed up for the league, and
each team consists of approximately eight players on average,
meaning that about 170 Monmouth College students are
participating, which is nearly 15 percent of the school’s
enrollment.
“It’s a great
turnout, we actually had to turn away a couple of teams, but
that’s a great problem to have,” Perry commented. “It seems like
the participants are having a great time playing, which is one of
our main goals. I’m happy with the enthusiasm—participation has
increased, and students are getting some exercise.”
Perry broke the 21
teams up into three divisions of seven teams apiece. Each team can
have a maximum of 10 members, and three men and women are required
on the court at all times.
Kaitlyn Kross is
the captain of a particularly awesome team called You Got Served,
and Kross said she has had a lot of fun being a part of the
league.
“So far intramural
volleyball has been a blast,” Kross said. “For our team, it’s not
about winning or losing, it’s about playing some volleyball, and
having a good time with friends.”
In addition to the
volleyball league, Monmouth students will have opportunities to
get involved in programs later this spring. Perry said the
intramural program will again organize a soccer league, Scots Day
softball, a bags tournament and a badminton tournament.
In addition, this
year will have several new events, such as ping-pong, pool, chess,
wrestling and Frisbee golf.
Monmouth students
are excited for the future events, and junior Andrew McLaren is
looking forward to organizing a team for Scots Day softball.
“I’m getting a
team together, and I hope to win, but mainly I’m there to have
some fun with some good friends,” McLaren said.
