You may have
noticed a lot of fraternity and sorority members running around
campus doing various activities and flaunting their Greek letters
during Monmouth College’s Greek Week 2008.
This year’s Greek
Week theme was superheroes, and throughout the week each sorority
and fraternity fought to become the superhero of the Monmouth
College campus. With numerous events each day, including the
all-famous Greek Week show on Thursday night, the Greek-life
members kept busy and definitely had a ton of fun along the way.
Starting on
Sunday, March 30, the Greek members cleaned a stretch of the
highway by Farm King. Along with this community service, the
Greeks put on a blood drive and also sponsored “Penny Wars”
between all of the sororities/fraternities, in which the Greek
organization that collected the most spare change won the contest.
The donations from these “Penny Wars” went to Relay for Life, and
together the Greeks raised over $900 to be put towards Relay for
Life.
Besides the
community service projects that every group participated in, there
were games throughout the week as well. A few of the games
included capture the flag (boys against girls) which was won by
the boys and flag football which was taken by the boys of Sigma
Phi Epsilon and the girls of Pi Beta Phi.
But the biggest
event of the week was the Greek Week show, and this year’s show
would be a memorable one for the boys of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the
ladies of Alpha Xi Delta, as their dance/performance brought them
home the gold for the 2008 Greek Week show. Awards were also given
to seniors Don Trinite (Zeta Beta Tau) and Sarah Hitchcock (Kappa
Kappa Gamma) who won Greek God and Goddess at the show,
respectively. The best banner was awarded to the boys of Sigma Phi
Epsilon, and the best dance sequence went to the ladies of Pi Beta
Phi and the boys of Zeta Beta Tau.
To wrap up Greek
Week, a banquet was held in Stockdale to announce the winners of
the week’s activities. This year’s overall winner was Alpha Xi
Delta. The spirit award went to the girls of Pi Beta Phi, and the
Greek God/Goddess for the 2008 Greek Week went to Aaron Payette of
Phi Delta Theta and Kate Hauser of Pi Beta Phi.
Greek Week was a
huge success and a lot of fun not only for those involved, but
also for the non-Greeks who got to observe all of the activities.
