It has come to
that time of year when seniors begin to reflect on their time
spent during the last four plus years of their lives. I find
myself in a very precarious position as I do not seem to want to
leave the hallowed halls of Monmouth College, yet I know the time
has come for me to move on.
I wonder, am I the
only one? Yes, Monmouth College does have its problems; it truly
has been a roller coaster ride at times. But, still after this
ride I find myself clinging to the memories that have made my life
so sweet.
Monmouth College
has a strange yet in many ways for me, true slogan: “What college
was meant to be.” Many claim that this tag line makes Monmouth
seem egotistical. The truth is that Monmouth College has the
unique ability to fit what college needs to be for not just one
student but any given number.
What college has
been for me is a culmination of a great many things. I am not just
taking away knowledge I learned in the classroom. I could have
gained that from anywhere. While at Monmouth I have gained
mentors, friends, experiences (both good and bad) and the corny
new sense of self.
When I arrived at
good ol’ MC I was a quiet, shy kid from Maryland. Now do not get
me wrong, I am still a kid, but, as most of you can attest, I have
become anything but shy and quiet.
My experiences
have changed and molded me into a new person, with depth and
breadth. I came into my first year of college not able to comment
on society, politics and the world around me. Now I am able to
discuss all those things.
My fondest
memories are sitting in offices of faculty members and having
discussion, real ones, not just me pleading for an extension on
the term paper looming over my head. It was the conversations
about life and the world and everything else.
These
conversations mostly happened in the offices of Tobias Gibson,
Simon Cordery, Stacy Cordery and I am sure others. These three
faculty members had a profound impact on my development not only
as a scholar but also a person.
So as the days on
the calendar slowly turn (and most of you probably count down the
days and soon hours to graduation) take time to reflect on how
Monmouth College has changed who you are and how you view the
world. These last four plus years have been filled with change and
progress. They have also been crammed with trials and
tribulations.
For Monmouth
College has been “what college was meant to be,” and I will
cherish and fondly remember everything, well almost everything, I
have learned and experienced.
