The Fighting Scots
outdoor track team swept the Midwest Conference Performer of the
Week honors in men’s and women’s track and field last weekend at
the Wartburg Select meet in Waverly, Iowa. The men took second
place as the women received fifth.
Luke Reschke, a
junior, and Peter Sprecher, a senior, were men’s track and field
winners. As for the women, junior Shannon Turczyn and senior Megan
Clennon were also winners in track and the field events,
respectively.
Reschke won both
the 200- and 400-meter races. His time of 22.54 was a conference
best in the 200, and he also earned MWC’s top time in the 400 with
a time of 48.82. Reschke also participated in the second placing
4X400 relay team and the 4X100 relay team, which earned a
conference best time of 42.32.
Sprecher, who was
last year’s NCAA Division III outdoor pole vault national
champion, continued what he does best. He vaulted a height of
17’0-3/4 to receive first place in the pole vault, which
automatically qualified him for next month’s National
Championships.
Turczyn
contributed a national provisional qualifying time of 14.43 in the
100-meter hurdles. She placed seventh in the 200-meters with a
time of 26.77 and also ran the 100 prelims in a time of 12.74.
Turczyn’s 100 hurdle and 100 dash times rank her first among the
MWC.
Clennon placed
first in the high jump with a provisional qualifying and
personal-best height of 5’5-3/4. Her jump qualifies her for the
NCAA outdoor championships next month. She received first place in
the javelin, with a distance toss of 115’9. The toss ranks her
second in the nation.
As for the rest of
the Fighting Scots, junior sprinter Aaron Daverin placed fourth in
the 100-meters and second in the 200. Senior Brad Gross placed
fifth in the 400-hurdles. Senior pole vaulter Jonny Henkins took
second place behind Sprecher in the pole vault, automatically
qualifying with a height of 16’6-1/2”. Junior Dan Higgins received
third in the javelin throw.
Other major
contributors for the men’s team include junior jumper Sheridan
Ray, who placed first in the long jump, sailing 21’9-1/2. Senior
thrower Zach Wilson continued his strong performance by receiving
second place in the shot put, fifth in the discus and second in
the hammer throw, provisionally qualifying him with a distance of
176’5”.
As for the women’s
track team, senior thrower Jenny Babos continued where she left
off in the indoor season, receiving two first places and
provisional qualifying in both events last weekend. She took first
in the shot put with a distance of 42’3-1/4” and first place in
the discus with a distance of 141’8”.
Jess White, a
senior vaulter, had a provisional qualifying height of 11’11-3/4”
in her first place standing in the pole vault.
The Fighting Scots
will travel to Macomb, Ill. this Saturday to compete in the Lee
Calhoun Invitation.
