It’s safe to say
that Founders Day, otherwise known as Scots Day, is an event that
many look forward to all year. Scots Eve has also gained
popularity over the years, with the cancellation of all classes
the following day.
This year’s theme
was “Pop, Scot and Drop it,” taking its name from the popular Huey
and Bow Wow hit “Pop, Lock and Drop it.” Most of the excitement
for Scots Day begins with the selling of student-made t-shirts.
This year, though, the few students brave enough to take on the
task of selling t-shirts to hundreds of undergraduates were faced
with another challenge. With the majority of Scots Day shirts
focusing on the amount of alcohol some students planned on
consuming, the College had decided to take action and required
that every shirt made in town be approved by the College first.
But to no surprise, crafty Monmouth students were able to get
around this dilemma.
Scots Eve started
off with a musical show held on Dunlap Terrace around 8 p.m. The
quad was easy to fill considering the recent popularity of the
night’s opening act, The Scotsmen. Enthused fans took part in
singing along with The Scotsmen as they performed cover songs of
The Backstreet Boys single “As Long as you Love Me” and “The Lion
Sleeps Tonight.” Other performers of the night were
singer-guitarists Lucas Pauley and Matt Danaher, along with the
bagpipers and a few members of the Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) fraternity.
ZBT members formed a band called “Firefly” and played a few cover
songs by The All-American Rejects, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and
Taking Back Sunday. They also played two original songs titled,
“Aphrodite” and “Lake Zurich.”
Preceding the
afternoon events for Scots Day, the annual Honors Convocation took
place at the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium at 11 a.m. Some awards
given out included, Freshman Woman and Man of the Year and Senior
Woman and Man of the Year.
After overcoming
the thunderstorm of the morning, the rest of the planned events
began to play out. Following a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs and
tacos in a bag, along with soft pretzels and sno cones, students
could head over to the Huff Athletic Center to participate in a
few interactive events.
Quad events (which
were moved to the Huff Athletic Center due to the rain) consisted
of an obstacle course, mechanical bull, human bowling and bouncy
boxing. There were also outside events that included a dunk tank
and a Pie-a-Phi stand hosted by the Pi Beta Phi sorority and the
Phi Delta Theta fraternity. All events on Scots Day lasted from
noon to 4:00 p.m.
With another
successful Scots Day completed, students have already started
planning next year’s fun.
