On Friday, Sept. 26, the men of the Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT)
fraternity hosted their annual Open Mic Night. The event was for
the charity Children’s Miracle Network and was held in front of
Stockdale Center on Dunlap Terrace. Many groups participated in
the event, and according to senior Kevin Douglas, who helped to
organize the event, the event was a great success. Douglas said,
"The event went excellent. We had a much bigger turnout than
expected." Senior Brian Rowe also agreed, stating, "We had a
great audience, and we heard some people even enjoyed the music
from their rooms."
Opening the event was the musical stylings
of local Monmouth College band "A Firefly Midnight." The band is
comprised of Rowe, sophomore Kevin Douglas on guitar, sophomore
Andrew Watson on the drums, senior Perry Mason on bass and
sophomore John Grzywa on drums. They played three cover songs
and two originals. Their originals were titled "Lake Zurich" and
"Aphrodite," and the covers were "Face Down" by Red Jumpsuit
Apparatus, "Move Along" by All-American Rejects and "Number 5
with a Bullet" by Taking Back Sunday. The band seemed to do a
spectacular job and really got the crowd on their feet.
Following the men of "A Firefly
Midnight" was the passionate one man act of Jordan "Colorado"
Hedburg. Hedburg dazzled the crowd with several country songs,
some original and some cover songs. He opened with a very
powerful "House of the Rising Sun" and continued with "Stuck in
the Middle", "Come to Me", "Skeleton Key", "Soul Meets Body",
"Lightening in the Sky" and "Ole Red." Visitor to Monmouth
College Denise Brown said, "They were all so excellent. They
were playing songs from my era and it really brought back
memories." Hedberg was also very happy with the show and said,
"I had fun, [and] we had a great turnout."
The next act dazzled the crowd with
another mixture of cover and original songs. Junior Lucas Pauley
and senior Matt Danaher took the stage with a new original song
by Danaher, entitled "Captivated." They followed with several
more songs "about a girl" and really stole the show with their
soft rock tunes.
The next act consisted of senior
James Sheppard and junior Corey Disbennet. They played "Foxy
Lady" and had junior Blake Lyon jump in on vocals for "Dani
Californication." Sheppard says the group threw the performance
together the night before, but this was not obvious to the
observer. They really brought down the house with their rock
hits.
Rowe enjoyed the other performers,
commenting, "They were spectacular. I was so glad other
musicians from around campus came to play. Matt Danaher and
Lucas Pauley are a couple of my favorite musicians on campus,
and I hope to have more people come and play music." ZBT is
looking forward to their next Open Mic Night, but it has not yet
been officially planned. Anyone interested in the next event
