October Mentoring Month

On Wednesday, Oct. 22, all classes meeting from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. will be cancelled. Before making extravagant afternoon plans for that Wednesday, students should know that the reason classes have been cancelled is because that is Monmouth College’s annual Mentoring Day, and whether they know it or not, students already have exciting and purposeful plans that day.

Mentoring Day takes place once a year, and during the afternoon professors and students from each department meet to discuss departmental activities such as internships, requirements and changes.

Marjorie Bond, associate professor of mathematics and computer science and coordinator of Mentoring Month, explained how the Mentoring Day schedule works for students who are double majors or are interested in attending two different departmental meetings, stating, "We try to arrange the schedule so that common double-majors or exploratory students who are undecided on a major can attend the meetings that they want." If a student would like to attend meetings with conflicting times, he or she can either split the time slot and visit both meetings or can meet with a professor in another department to find out what he or she missed. Bond noted, "If you haven’t chosen a major yet, what better opportunity than to go to Mentoring Day and explore?"

This is the first year that Monmouth College will conduct a Mentoring Month. "There used to only be a Mentoring Day, and in the last few years we called it Mentoring Week, but there just wasn’t enough time in that one week for advisors to meet with all of their advisees, so this year, we’ve moved to a Mentoring Month," Bond explained.

When asked about her thoughts on Mentoring Month, Bond replied enthusiastically, "Mentoring Month is a time for professors to meet with their advisees about things other than registration. Professors can use this time to discuss goals and plans with students, and take a little time to get to know their advisees better. "Professors might advise their students differently if they know them and their aspirations better," Bond added thoughtfully about the benefits of Mentoring Month.

Schedules for Mentoring Day meetings will be posted throughout campus, and students should contact professors to make appointments throughout the month of October.
