This last week was the beginning of conference play for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. The Scots fell in two hard loses that motivated the teams to win this next week. The women fell to Grinnell College on Sunday, Sept. 28, in a 4-1 loss.

The Scots came out fired up and ready to improve their record to over the .500 mark. Grinnell scored early in the match and the score was 2-0 by half time. This did not phase the Scots because they have been behind in half their games this year and still have been able to win or tie.

The next 30 minutes was a fight to be remembered, but the veteran Pioneers scored with only 12 minutes remaining. The women will host Illinois College on Saturday, Oct. 4, and hope to become 1-1 in conference play.

The men’s soccer team also lost a tough battle to the rival Knox College on Saturday, Sept. 27. The tension was high in the first half and the Scots were on top 1-0 at half time. The tag team effort of freshman Mark Serio and sophomore Joe Howell would be the only players for the team to find the net. This lead, however, relaxed the Scots a little too much and the second half belonged to Knox.

Nothing came together for the men and Knox won the day 2-1. On Tuesday, Sept. 30, the men took a bruising against Millikin in a 3-0 loss. The men face off against Westminster on Saturday, Oct. 4, and hope to get back into some black ink.
