Men's soccer season winds down

The Monmouth College men’s soccer team is no stranger to adversity, but that hasn’t stopped them from going all-out on the field.

The team has posted a 2-11-1 record while fighting the injury bug and overcoming the age-obstacle. The 2009 team is a young one, with 14 of the 29 roster spots filled with freshman or sophomores. Additionally, there are only five seniors on the squad, which bodes for a stronger team in future seasons.

While the current win-loss record isn’t as gaudy as hoped for at the beginning of the season, this year has not been without highlights.

"A key win this year would definitely have to be our game against Knox," said sophomore center/forward Joshua Fernando Del Valle. "They had beaten us by one last year, and we wanted to come back this year and make a statement. We dominated their team for a full 90 minutes."

Indeed the 1-0 win over Knox on Sept. 26 seems to have validated the season for the boys.

"The Knox game was certainly a highlight," said freshman midfielder Jordan Lankford.

The team now comes off Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Illinois College but is anxious to end the year with a bang. Their next two home games feature Beloit College and Lake Forest, both Midwest Conference opponents to round out the regular season.

"Our team has been plagued with injuries this year, said Del Valle, "especially losing our team captain Danny Davis for the whole season. So winning these next two games would help us go out strong."

"Our team is still a very young team, and we have much growing to do," said Del Valle. "Luckily we will only be losing two seniors and will return most of our starters."
