After losing three straight home games and as well as every game since Oct. 10 against Ripon College, the women’s soccer team managed to tally its fourth victory of the year winning 1-0 on Sunday, Oct. 25, at home against Cornell College.

Sophomore forward Amy Unzicker scored the lone goal in the 62 minutes of play. Having trailed throughout the game in their last three matches against conference opponents, the Scots turned things around against the Rams by jumping ahead early.

"We got a lead and we didn’t have to take chances or play catch up," said head coach Barry McNamara. "This time we were able to protect the lead unlike the last few games."

Despite only having five shots on goal, the Scots defense took charge and held the Rams to only one shot on goal, while also tallying a save courtesy of sophomore goalkeeper Katerina Meletis. In fact, Meletis has been filling in for the injured junior, Sarah Wintersteen, who broke her leg earlier in the season after getting her cleat stuck in the turf.

Wintersteen is not the only Scot who has succumbed to a season ending injury as sophomore forward Kerry Kost ruptured a tendon in her ankle and freshman forward Ashley Reynoso has been out of the lineup for nearly the entire season due to a torn ACL and MCL.

"We’ve had to play a lot of people out of position this year due to all the injuries," said McNamara. "Camille San German has had to step up and she has done a really good job so far. Meletis has also proven that she can play at this level. Our offense has struggled and our scoring is down because of all the injuries."

The proof is in the pudding as the Scots have been outscored 36 -15 this year, but hopefully the win against Cornell will help swing things in the right direction as the team looks to close out its last three matches of the season.

"We need to focus on passing the ball well and playing physical soccer throughout the rest of the season," said McNamara. "We think we can hang with Beloit and if we’re still in it by Nov. 1, then I like our chances."

The team’s next game will be a home match against Beloit College on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m.

"I think we can finish fourth and that’s what we’re shooting for," said McNamara. "These last three games are all doable and the playoffs are still within range."
