While
the rest of Monmouth College’s Class of 2010 made the trip back
to Monmouth this past August, senior Tynan Sinks had just began
his new job at MTV in Los Angeles, Calif. After spending a
second consecutive summer in Los Angeles interning for MTV,
Sinks landed a job at the network in the press department.
In the spring
semester of 2008, Sinks secured an internship with MTV in the
planning and design department. "In the middle of the spring,
they told me they were interested in me, and kept me waiting
until the day before graduation to let me know that I had the
internship and I needed to be out there in two weeks," explained
Sinks. After scrambling to find a place to live, Sinks made it
work and spent the summer in Los Angeles as an intern for MTV.
During that summer
Sinks managed to make connections with some people in the press
department and was invited back this past summer for an
internship in that department. After a successful summer as an
intern and two weeks before he was supposed to head home, Sinks
saw an opportunity to obtain a job in that department.
As soon as the
possibility was presented to him, Sinks emailed Associate
Professor of Communication Trudi Peterson and Professor of
Communication Bill (Doc) Wallace to see if he could finish his
senior year at MC while still in Los Angeles To Sinks’ surprise,
they both emailed him back telling him that there was a
possibility of it working out.
"The complications
came later, after I had already moved back out here and they
took about a month to get worked out, which was nerve racking
for me, but more so my parents," said Sinks. "But they did get
worked out, so I can’t complain,."
Now that Sinks has
had a couple months to experience life as a full-time employee
at MTV while still being a full-time student at Monmouth
College, he claims it is not as hard as he would have expected.
"The whole full time job thing seems to make the days and weeks
fly by a lot faster than normal, so even if I think I’m doing
well keeping up, I still have to keep a close eye on due dates
and things like that," commented Sinks. "Sometimes it’s just
easier to tackle a full week’s load of assignments at one time
on a weekend afternoon, rather than trying to fit everything in
during the week."
Sinks explained that
so far, his favorite moments working at MTV have been a mix
between daily meetings and working at larger events.
"Working huge events
like movie premiers and the Video Music Awards is amazing
because, there’s no other place you can get that kind of
experience, anywhere," explained Sinks. "But also there are the
day to day things that I learn a lot from too, such as sitting
in press strategy meetings or putting together a media analysis.
It’s all really great."
Throughout his whole
experience of trying to get the college to let this work, Sinks
saw some Monmouth College faculty go the extra mile for him.
"I am forever
indebted to Dr. Wallace, Dr. McGann, Dr. Peterson, and Dean
Jakoubek for being willing to work so hard to help me out," said
Sinks. "There is no way I’d be doing all of this if it wasn’t
for them. They didn’t have to work so hard to find ways that
would work for me to pull this off, it wasn’t part of their job
description."
He also explained
that Professor Susan Van Kirk has been a major inspiration and
source of advice for the past two years and stated, "I owe a lot
of my sanity over the past two years to her."
Even after deciding
to give up his senior year with friends Sinks claims that he
does not regret any decision he has made.
"After everything,
being in the place I am today was never entirely unexpected, but
I sure didn’t think it would happen like this," said Sinks
After graduation Sinks plans to
continue what he is doing. "I’d like to see this whole MTV gig
through for as long as possible. See where it takes me."
