Having been a three sport athlete and the third-leading scorer
with 1,318 points during her playing days at Monmouth College,
2003 graduate Melissa Bittner enters her fifth year as head
coach of the women’s basketball team with the hopes making the
playoffs already on her radar.
The Fighting Scots posted a 14-9 record and 9-7 conference
record last year under Bittner’s management and she is in the
process of setting goals this season for her squad. "We’re going
to concentrate on defense and rebounding," said Bittner. "The
best teams in the nation win the most games with their defense."
Bittner has also
been focusing game strategy for the season, beginning on
Tuesday, Nov. 17 at home against Carthage College.
"Look for in your
face aggressive defense," said Bittner. "We’ll also be playing
zone more than we have in past years. We’re also going to try
and switch up our schemes more often. We want to keep our
opponent on our toes and change things up so they never know
what to expect."
However, Bittner
will have her work cut out for her considering 13 of her 18
players are freshmen. Despite such a youthful squad Bittner has
seen some positive things from her underclassmen.
"Their work ethic
and attitude have been very good in practice," said Bittner.
"They are willing to listen and learn, and they understand that
a good work ethic will provide opportunities. We will rely on a
lot of our returning players, but a few freshmen will need to
step up and contribute."
A few of the
freshmen whom Bittner has shown confidence in are Colleen
Forrest and Zipporah Williams. "Sure we’ll probably have a few
more violations with such a young team, but we’ll work on the
little things and focus on good fundamentals," said Bittner.
As for the returning
players, the Scots will turn to the leadership of captain guards
Lynsey Barnard and Justine Boone. Bittner has also expressed her
confidence in the leadership of junior guard Alison Andrews.
"All of these girls
have lots of experience and they are game tested and game
ready," said Bittner. "They know what it takes to be successful
and they know how to win."
Although the team
has had success in the past, Bittner is continuously looking for
ways for her Scots to improve their game. "We could improve our
half court game and the continuity of our offense," said
Bittner.
The team’s home
opener will be on Tuesday, Nov. 17 against Carthage College, a
team Monmouth has not faced since 2001, when they fell 87-52 to
the Redmen. "We’re going up against a good program," said
Bittner. "This game wasn’t scheduled to give us an easy "W" in
the standings."
