The Grounds provides social space for MC student body:
Student run program helps peers unwind on those late weekday nights

There are many social outlets for study on campus and Jordan Hedberg is committed to bringing a coffeehouse environment to the students of Monmouth College.

Junior business student, Jordan “Colorado” Hedberg declares “There is a void in Monmouth College’s student night life which needs to be filled so that students have something to do but drink alcohol.”  Hedberg and his associates are attempting to fill that void by revamping the coffeehouse gathering at The Grounds.

In the past, The Grounds has been a communal place on campus for students to gather, but it has not been a substantial assembly of students.  Keeping with the theme of a laid back place for students to mingle, study, play music, and relax while enjoying various coffees, teas and hot chocolate, Hedberg is seeking to expand this positive atmosphere to more members of the student body.

Previously, The Grounds was put on by a group of voluntary Resident Assistants, but seemed to gather only one group of students.  Hedberg wishes to broaden the appeal of The Grounds by offering music, board games and possibly Sunday and Monday night football game viewings.

Hedberg encourages, “everyone to come check us out.” Also, he is extending the days and hours of The Grounds.  In the past, students could only gather on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Beginning this year, The Grounds is open Monday-Thursday from 7:30-midnight and based on interest, possibly extended to Friday and Saturday night special events like concerts by local bands.  He also hopes to provide students with beverage delivery to their dorms during midterms and finals week.

While he admires the program of the past, he knows that with a little improvement The Grounds could be a great success.  As of now, The Grounds is funded by donations from the students who participate.  With these donations, he is able to purchase the coffee, tea and cups he needs but also wants to improve the quality of the beverages and add a cappuccino and espresso machine.

The goal is to keep The Grounds free for students as it is meant to be a service to students.  Hedberg is also extending this premise further for students and faculty alike during the day with the addition of a coffee-cart to Mellinger Center.

“Although it is a place for students, it is a place for faculty as well to come and interact with students,” says Hedberg.  Within the next few weeks, look for a coffee-cart in Mellinger to grab a quick, quality beverage between classes.

Eventually, Hedberg hopes that if the coffee-cart gains enough momentum it will also create job opportunities for students on campus.  As of now, he and his associates are volunteers looking to make their contribution.  He also hopes that his institutions will continue to serve future classes after he has left Monmouth.

Whether you are looking for a casual place to mingle, or the caffeine boost to make it through the day, Jordan Hedberg’s emerging coffee enterprise on campus is sure to satisfy your cravings.
