In an age of
increasing specialization within professions, it is not surprising that many colleges,
universities and trade schools have similarly attempted to isolate their departments or narrow
the scope of their teaching, believing that an intense immersion in a particular discipline is
the best preparation for graduate study and an eventual career.
At Monmouth, we believe that an undergraduate education is most
useful if it crosses multiple disciplines and exposes students to as wide a body of knowledge
as it possibly can.
Graduate and professional schools in general do not care what
a student's undergraduate major is; the specialization will occur in postgraduate study. The
important consideration is that students planning professional careers determine as early as
possible the specific professions they wish to pursue, so that they may work closely with
their advisors to develop the long-range academic plans required for entering those
professions.
