Typical
requirements for medical school include two years of chemistry, at
least one year of biology, one year of physics (usually with calculus)
and a year of composition.
The
requirements are very similar to those for a chemistry,
biochemistry, or biology major, so many students major in one of
those areas. However, it is not unusual for students who have
majored in history or music to be accepted to medical school, as
long as they have successfully completed the science requirements.
It is recommended that students complete the
required science requirements by the end of junior year, so that
they will be prepared to take the MCAT (Medical College Admissions
Test) before the beginning of their senior year.
This timing in necessary if the student
intends to begin medical school the fall after graduation from
Monmouth.

Some schools also require courses in calculus,
biochemistry, psychology, sociology and statistics.
Students interested in a particular
medical school should check the school web site for requirements to
make sure that the necessary coursework can be completed.
Students may also refer to
the Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) book, which is
published by the Association of American Medical Colleges
http://www.aamc.org, and lists
all medical schools’ requirements. This site also contains
information about the MCAT and the site to register for the test.
