Computer Services FAQ

Where can I find the Computer Center frequently asked questions?
You can go to the Information Systems web page.

How do I change my password?
Press CTRL > ALT > DELETE (at the same time), from the Windows Menu, click Change Password, Enter your old password, then enter your new password, and re-enter your new password. Then click OK. Remember to record your new password in a safe location.

How do I access my e-mail from the web (off-campus)?
It is now possible to access your e-mail from home. You can use either Netscape or Internet Explorer, however, we would encourage you to use the latest version of these software programs. If you don’t have a later version, you may experience difficulties logging in. We would encourage you to download these from the Internet.

You will also need to have Internet service at home as there is no dial-up access. Your e-mail will look different at home than it does on campus, but will function similarly. You will have access to all of your e-mail folders as well as your calendar and contacts. To get to your e-mail account, complete the following steps:

1.  Once you're logged on through your internet service provider, type in the following address: http://email.monm.edu/

2.  You should be taken to the Monmouth College Web-based email screen. Type in your Monmouth College login name. Then hit your ENTER key.

3.  Another box will appear. You must again type in your full Monmouth College login name (e.g., msmith@monm.edu). Hit your tab key, then type in your password in the lower box. Then click OK.

5.  You should then be taken to your Inbox. You can then double click on your e-mail messages to read them.

You may find that navigating in your remote e-mail system will be different than when you are on campus. You can do replies, forwards, etc., just like when you are at your on-campus terminal. Attachments can also be sent.

How do I set up personal folders?
Your e-mail account will allow you to store up to 8mb of e-mail. After that, you will receive messages from the System Administrator telling you that your account is full. Even after deleting several messages, you may still be over the limit, and want to save some of the messages. You can save the messages in what’s called a Personal Folder.

A Personal Folder is a place where you can store e-mail, separate from the e-mail server. You can create this folder to store your messages on your F:\ drive (which is where we recommend), or to your A:\ drive. The Personal Folder would always appear in your MS Outlook window in the Folder List. Where the actual files are stored would be determined when you initially create your Personal Folder.

If you create your Personal Folder on your F:\ drive, the folder will be accessible to you no matter where you are on campus. This option will give you the most versatility and is the one recommended by the Information Systems Center. The folder will be accessible from any campus computer.

To create a Personal Folder, compete the following steps:

1) Open MS Outlook in the normal way.

2) Click on Tools in the menu bar. Then choose Services.

3) Choose the Add button on the center left-hand side of the dialog box.

4) A small box will open. Click on Personal Folders at the bottom of the list. Then click OK at the bottom of the box.

5) The computer may default to storing the folder on the C: drive.  You should change this to a space of your own (ex: a floppy disk or the F: drive). We recommend this folder:

F:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

To change to the above folder, click on the down arrow to the right of Outlook (located at the top of the dialog box.  Then click on the F:\ drive.  Next, double-click on the Windows folder.  Double-click on the folder called Application Data.  Then, double-click on the Microsoft folder.  Finally, double-click on the Outlook folder.  Whatever folder you choose, do NOT use any on the C:\ drive.  Your personal folder will not be accessible on any other campus machine if you do.  Also, you risk losing your files if you store them on the C:\ drive as they are routinely cleaned of any files not needed for college purposes.  You should also change the File name: of your personal folder to something meaningful. When you are finished, press the Open button.

6) In the next Dialog box, you can give your Personal Folder a name.  Again, choose and type in a meaningful folder name.

7) In the center portion of the box, you can set a password. (This is not necessary, and we don't recommend it.) However, if you wish to use this option, the password can be different from your Monmouth College password.  When you have made all of your selections, click the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.

8) This should return you to the Services dialog box. The name of your Personal Folder should now be listed. Click the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.

9) You should then be able to see that your Personal Folder is listed in your Folder List on the left side of your screen. NOTE: the folder will be listed in alphabetical order in your Folder List.  Messages that you want to keep can be dragged into your new Personal Folder, just like any other e-mail folder.

How do I access my phone messages (voice mail) from off-campus?
For complete directions, go to the online Unity User Manual and click on Checking Messages on the left-hand side. The files above are Adobe PDF files. You will need the free version of Adobe Reader to view these files. You can download the program at the Adobe website.

If I am bringing my own computer to hookup to the network in my room, what specs should it have.
In order to connect to the Monmouth College network, your personal computer must have a Microsoft Windows (95, 98, ME, XP, or 2000), Macintosh, or Unix operating system, an Ethernet network adapter, and a data (network) cable. No other specifications are required. Currently, the college provides full network support for personal computers that have a Windows operating system.
