New Residence Hall Construction |
|
Yet to
be named, Monmouth's newest residence hall is rising rapidly on the
northwest side of campus, just west of Graham Hall. The 131-bed
facility will contain 35,000 square feet, and will be ready for
occupancy in August 2005, in time to accommodate a projected larger
student body. The gracious, Georgian-style brick building, projected
to cost $6.4 million, will be composed primarily of two-bedroom
“quads,” each housing four students and sharing a bathroom.

Gracie
Peterson turns 102 |
|
Grace Gawthrop Peterson, who graduated from
Monmouth College in 1922 and spent the next 50 years as a member of its
music faculty, turns 102 on March 2, 2004.
Known to generations as "Gracie," the
centenarian will observe the day quietly at Community Medical Center's
long-term care facility in Monmouth, where she has been a resident since
suffering a fall almost two years ago. Prior to that, she was continuing
to entertain diners at Meling's Restaurant with her inimitable piano
style, as she had for three decades.

Huff
Athletic Center Opens |
|
The
Huff Athletic Center, which opened in the fall of 2003, is a comprehensive
facility for sports, fitness and recreation.
The $22 million, 155,000-square-foot complex is built around the college’s
original 1925 gymnasium and the more recent Glennie Gymnasium.

Trotters Provide Gift to Monmouth College |
|
George and Maxine Murdy
Trotter of Santa Ana, Calif., both 1947 graduates of Monmouth
College, recently made a gift of $1 million to establish the
Trotter
Fitness Complex in the college’s new Huff Athletic Center. The
state-of-the-art fitness complex, occupying the college’s original
1925 gymnasium, contains cardio and free weight equipment, an
aerobic/dance studio, a juice bar and even a rock climbing wall. It
will anchor the northeast portion of the 155,000-square-foot
athletic center. more |

Commencement Weekend 2003 |
|
Monmouth College
celebrated the 146th Annual Commencement exercises on Sunday, May
11th. Despite cold weather and strong winds, hundreds of happy
families gathered to celebrate commencement during MC's
Sesquicentennial year.

Shaddocks Give $210,000 Gift to Monmouth College |
| Bonnie
Bondurant Shaddock ’54 is the retired president of an educational
television production company and an all-around great supporter of
Monmouth College. Be it her service on the Board of Trustees, her
willingness to discuss her career with students or the $210,000
unitrust gift she and her husband, Roland "Shad" Shaddock, recently
gave to the college, she has repeatedly blessed her alma mater with
her time and resources.

Dr. Roger Fritz '49 Inducted into the MC Hall of Achievement |
| Dr. Roger
Fritz of Naperville, Ill., was inducted into the Monmouth College
Hall of Achievement on Oct. 11, 2002. The award, which honors the
late Mr. and Mrs. Wendell F. Whiteman ’27 of Monmouth, was created
to inspire current Monmouth students to set personal goals and
aspire to become leaders. While a student at Monmouth, Fritz was the
winner of state and national Intercollegiate Oratory contests. After
receiving a degree in political science from Monmouth in 1950, he
went on to acquire M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of
Wisconsin in 1952 and 1956, respectively.

Monmouth College Remembers September 11, 2001 |
The Monmouth College community
remembers the victims and families of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United
States of America.
A memorial plaque depicting the
famous photograph of firefighters raising the flag over Ground Zero will be unveiled
during a candlelight observance of the 9/11 anniversary. The text was written by members
of the Class of 2002.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Huff Athletic Center |
| Called the Huff Athletic Center in honor of
Walter Huff Jr., and his late wife, Elizabeth, the new facility will be built into the
college's existing gymnasium facilities and will include a new natatorium and a new
field house with an indoor track. Work on the 155,000-square-foot project has already
begun and is expected to take a little more than a year.
A $10 million gift from Huff, announced last August, made
the project possible, and Huff was on hand to receive the thanks of the Monmouth College
community and also to deliver some remarks.

Commencement
Weekend 2002 |
| Rain dampened Commencement Weekend and moved
the ceremony into Glennie Gymnasium. Families, friends, faculty and staff joined to
celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class and to hear the featured speaker,
Monmouth College graduate, Dr. Stanley E. Chism '63.
Chism came to Monmouth from Newton, Iowa, and was involved
in numerous campus activities, including Blue Key and Tau Kappa Epsilon. He was elected
the Outstanding Freshman Man, president of the sophomore class and TKE president. Chism
earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1967.

Arthur Dahl Commits
$1.5 Million Dollars Toward Auditorium |
|
Arthur Dahl of Muscatine, Iowa, retired senior vice president of HON Industries, Inc.,
has made a commitment of $1.5 million to Monmouth College.
Made in memory of his
late wife, Dorothy Peterson Dahl, a 1940 MC graduate and a member of the college’s board
of trustees for 11 years, the gift will fund roughly half of a $3 million renovation of
the Auditorium, the college’s oldest academic building. Work on the project is expected
to start later this spring. The building will be named the Dorothy and Arthur
Dahl Auditorium and Chapel.

Gracie Peterson
Honored in 100th Birthday Celebration |
|
Monmouth’s Gracie Peterson '22 marks her 100th birthday Feb. 28, 2002 with a
7 p.m. concert celebration at the Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg. “Amazing
Gracie: A Centennial Celebration” was organized by the Monmouth Rotary Club and
Monmouth College.

MC 2001 Hall of Achievement |
|
Dr. Timothy Lee ’61, a pioneer in the development of ultrasound for medical use,
received Monmouth College’s highest alumni honor as he was inducted into its Hall of
Achievement Oct. 19 during Homecoming weekend.
Inspired by his father, who was educated in the United States, Lee came to Monmouth
College in the fall of 1958 with the vague intention of becoming a medical doctor. He
quickly found a home in the chemistry department, where he was embraced by the staff,
and soon turned his professional aims toward chemistry.

Trustee Roger Rasmusen '56 makes $1 Million Gift to MC |
| Roger Rasmusen of Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.,
has made a gift of $1 million to Monmouth College. Rasmusen, a 1956 MC graduate, is the
retired chief financial officer of Baxter International, formerly Baxter Travenol
Laboratories, in Deerfield, Ill. Prior to joining Baxter in 1979, he was the financial
vice president and treasurer of DeKalb AgResearch, Inc., and also worked for
International Harvester in Paris, France, and for the Army Finance Corps in Leghorn,
Italy. He received an MBA from Harvard University in '58.

Auditorium Renovation Gets Boost From Mellinger Foundation |
| Monmouth College’s oldest
building -- and one of its most used -- will soon receive a major renovation thanks to a
lead gift of $1 million from the Edward Arthur Mellinger Foundation, Inc., of Monmouth.
"Renovations to our Auditorium have been needed
for some time, and this wonderful lead gift provides the impetus to raise the $2.75
million that will be needed for the project," said Richard Giese, president of Monmouth
College. "Our plans are to make the Auditorium a first-class facility for our campus
community and for the local community as well."

Bunces Make Major Gift to Monmouth College |
| Peter and Gail Bunce of St.
Louis, Mo., have made a gift of $1.15 million to Monmouth College, according to
president Richard Giese. Bunce has maintained a keen
interest in the institution since being drawn to Monmouth in 1971 through a mutual
friend of former president Richard Stine.

Colliers Give One Million Dollars to Monmouth College |
| Monmouth College
has received a gift of $1 million from Ann Mack Collier and her husband, John, of
Mukilteo, Washington. Mrs. Collier is a
1963 graduate of the college and a member of its board of trustees since October of
2000.
The Colliers previously established two
unitrusts for Monmouth College. Their $1 million gift is unrestricted. It will be
applied toward the college's current $5.5 million campaign to renovate Hewes Library.

Bowers Make $2 Million Dollar Gift for Residence Hall |
| The newest
building at Monmouth College will be called David A. Bowers Residence Hall thanks to a
$2 million naming gift from Bowers, who is vice chairman and chief operating officer of
CompX International Inc., in Mauldin, S.C.
Bowers, a 1960 Monmouth graduate
and the chair of the college’s Board of Trustees, is excited about the direction the
college is headed and hopes his gift will encourage others to follow his lead.

| Retired Ford Motor Company
chairman Harold "Red" Poling and his wife, Marian, have pledged a $3 million gift to
Monmouth College to enhance international studies. College president Richard F. Giese,
who made the announcement to the college community earlier this week, anticipates a

Alma Mater |
| The Wackerle name is associated
with leadership at Monmouth College, and the man responsible for creating the school’s
Wackerle Career and Leadership Center in 1996 has stepped into a prominent role for his
alma mater once again, pledging more than $1.5 million to Monmouth College.
