Monmouth
College was founded in 1853 as the dream of two Presbyterian clergymen and
a handful of frontier businessmen and farmers. Conceived as an alternative
to the common schools of the day and as a training ground for ministers
and missionaries, it began life as a humble academy without an endowment
or even a building of its own.
With its very survival on the line, the
school sought a leader of rare vision and courage. Its prayers were
answered in the fall of 1856 with the arrival of a dynamic young minister
from Boston named David Alexander Wallace.
A Thousand Hearts'
Devotion is a tribute to the resolve of President Wallace and his
successors, who built one of today's great liberal arts colleges on little
more than faith and determination. It is the story of faculty who taught
without salary, students who dreamed of and achieved a life beyond the
family farm, and grateful alumni who endowed their alma mater both
financially and intellectually.
A
century and a half after its birth, Monmouth College is today at a
position of strength unparalleled in its history. Through a compelling
narrative and scores of previously unpublished photographs, this volume
chronicles the remarkable journey of an institution through its first 15
decades, as it met and overcame wave after wave of adversity.
From
the firing on Fort Sumter to the attacks of September 11, 2001, A
Thousand Hearts' Devotion offers a comprehensive review of the people
and the events the color the tapestry of Monmouth College's history. It is
a story that continues to unfold and grow richer with the passage of time.
