ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY
Release
Date: February 18, 2000
In conjunction with two archaeological lectures to be held at
Monmouth College March 6, a special subscription dinner for the Western Illinois Society of
the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) will be held that evening at 5:30 in the Private
Dining Room of Stockdale Center.
The dinner will help the Western Illinois Society celebrate
its charter, which it received in December of 1999. The charter will be on display and a short
ceremony is planned to formally present it Monmouth College President Richard Giese.
The meal will begin with hors d’oevres and light drinks. The
main menu will be beef tenderloin with red wine sauce, carrots vichy, spinach salad, rolls,
coffee or tea and dessert. The cost is $11.50 and must be paid in advance. For reservations,
phone Rita Schwass at 309-457-2149.
Earlier in the day, Penn State University professor of
ancient history emeritus Eugene Borza will speak on "Royal Possession of Alexander the Great,"
at 12 noon in the Stockdale Center’s Highlander Room. Borza will also follow the subscription
dinner with a 7:30 p.m. lecture on "Modern Greece: Classical or Balkan?"
Borza’s first talk is an analysis of the contents of Tomb II
in the Macedonian royal cemetery at Vergina in northern Greece. His evening presentation will
tell the story of 18th- and 19th-century travelers who came to Greece in search of the glories
of the ancient Hellenes and found instead a modern Balkan people who seemed unlike their
famous ancestors.
To further aid the society’s celebration, an AIA Centennial
display will be featured at the college’s Hewes Library throughout the month of March. The
exhibit features activities of both local societies and the central AIA.
