EDUCATION PIONEER TO ADDRESS
MONMOUTH COLLEGE CLASS OF 2001
Henry M. Levin, a pioneer in the accelerated education movement,
will deliver the commencement address to approximately 210 graduating seniors during Monmouth
College’s 144th annual commencement exercises on May 13. The Mother’s Day ceremony will begin
at noon on Wallace Hall Plaza.
The ceremony will conclude a weekend of activities honoring the
Class of 2001. Saturday’s events will include a baccalaureate service at 2 p.m. in the college
Auditorium, a farewell reception hosted by President Richard Giese on Quinby House lawn at 4
p.m., and a formal banquet for seniors and their families in Glennie Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
The baccalaureate service will feature traditional religious
hymns and scripture readings by Monmouth College faculty, staff and students, and a litany led
by President Giese. The Monmouth Chorale will sing several hymns, and sophomore Ian T. Nelson
of Bellingham, Wash., and freshman Rachel Danaher of Palos Heights, Ill., will play “Amazing
Grace” on the bagpipes.
The traditional “senior send-off,” sponsored by the Monmouth
College Alumni Association, will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday at VFW Post 2301, 830 N. G St.
Seniors, their families, faculty, alumni and friends are invited to a dance with food and
refreshments.
On Sunday, seniors will gather for a class photo on the
Auditorium steps at 11:15 a.m. They will then line up for the traditional processional from
Broadway to the Wallace Hall Plaza. Their march will be accompanied by music from the Monmouth
College Pipe Band .
Zina Lewis, a senior from Pekin, Ill., and the college’s 2000
Lincoln Laureate, will bid farewell to the college on behalf of the graduating class, and
President Giese will reciprocate on behalf of the college.
A reception for graduates and their families will be held on
Dunlap Terrace following the commencement ceremony.
