MC HILLEL CHAPTER ONE OF ONLY TWO IN NATION
TO RECEIVE DOCUMENTARY GRANT
The Monmouth College Hillel, a Jewish student organization on
campus, was one of only two Hillels in the nation to receive full funding for an advance
viewing of the upcoming television documentary "From Swastika to Jim Crow."
The documentary, which depicts the moving story of Jewish
refugees from Hitler's Germany who went on to work at historically black colleges and
universities in the segregated South, will be seen on PBS in February, but memberrs of the
Monmouth College community will be able to view it on Jan. 28 in the College Auditorium.
A joing project of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and
Hillel, with funding by the Granoff Foundation, the program is designed to increase tolerance
and understanding for and among blacks, Jews and other minorities on college campuses.
In addition to a copy of the video, the grant will provide
the Monmouth Hillel with a facilitator from the ADL's "A Campus of Difference" program. The
facilitator will lead a discussion following the showing of the film, and the grant will also
provide a discussion curriculum and up to $750 in expenses.
The regional ADL office will work with Monmouth's Hillel to
bring local Jewish and African-American community leaders to the event. If possible, people
who appeared in the film and lived through its events will also be brought to campus.
The other college that received full funding for the program
is the University of Nevada-Reno. Some of the schools that received partial funding to view
the documentary include Northern Arizona University, East Carolina University, the University
of Louisville, Kenyon College and Vassar College.
