MONMOUTH COLLEGE GRADUATE COMPLETES
HISTORIC VOYAGEMonmouth College graduate Robert Jornlin ’61 was the captain
of the historic voyage of the LST-325, which reached its final destination of Mobile, Ala., on
Jan. 10.
The LST-325 (Landing Ship, Tank) had a crew of 29 Navy
veterans with an average age of 72. They brought the ship back to the United States from
Greece to serve as a floating museum.
The 6,500-mile trans-Atlantic voyage has received national
and even global attention, and media reporting on the event has included NBC, ABC and NPR
Radio.
It is anticipated that there will be widescale national
coverage from Mobile of the completion of the trip. One enthusiast included the following on
an e-mail to the crew of the LST-325: "I have the greatest admiration and respect for you men.
You probably have not thought it, but you are going to be our new NATIONAL HEROES." Another
wrote simply that he was "Proud to tears."
