MONMOUTH COLLEGE COLORS ADORN DOWNTOWN AREA
Release
Date: March 8, 2000
The crimson and white colors of Monmouth College will
be on display this spring and into the future thanks to an effort by Barb Carlson and the rest
of the Downtown Business Council.
Carlson, who runs A Touch of Country at 61 Public Square,
began displaying a Monmouth College flag last fall when she flew it for Family Weekend and
Homecoming. Recently, she approached the council, which is a branch of the Monmouth Area
Chamber of Commerce, and suggested that other businesses start the practice as well.
"Everybody went for it and said it was a great idea," said
Carlson, who was put in charge of the project. She is taking orders for flags through March 10
and hopes to have 30-40 businesses participating.
"We’ll fly the flags for the Freshman Walkout," she said,
referring to the event in late August when new students at the college go on a walking tour of
the downtown area to familiarize themselves with Monmouth’s retail, professional and
governmental resources. "We’ll also fly them when President Bush comes to town."
In addition, Carlson said the businesses would display
Monmouth’s colors on home dates for the Fighting Scots’ athletic teams. Those colors will also
be visible this spring, as the Downtown Beautification Committee is planning to plant red and
white flowers throughout the downtown area.
"I’m just so tired of hearing about the houses that the
college has torn down," Carlson said. "The college has provided so many jobs for the people of
Monmouth."
