MONMOUTH-KNOX BATTLE FOR ALUMINUM FISH
Release Date: November 16, 2001
The intensity and the athleticism won’t
quite equal the Bronze Turkey game, but this battle between Monmouth and Knox colleges will
provide a trophy for the victor.
Each year, the faculty and staff of the
two schools get together for a charity basketball game, and while any points that may be
scored should probably be considered charity, last year’s contest proved to be a close
encounter. Knox won that faculty-staff battle 67-64 in Galesburg. To the victor goes the
coveted Aluminum Fish, a cheap imitation of football’s Bronze Turkey.
This year’s contest will be hosted by
Monmouth College on Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. at Glennie Gym. Donations for a yet to be named charity
will be taken at the door.
Barry McNamara, Monmouth College
co-sports information director said, “We thought about having the game earlier in the year,
but it took us from March until October to recuperate.”
“We’ll have entertainment at halftime, as
if the game itself weren’t enough,” said Ken Cramer, professor of biology at Monmouth and
co-organizer of the event. Last year Cramer and Knox professor Peter Schwartzman provided the
halftime entertainment with a take-off of the Abbott and Costello routine “Who’s on first?”
Based on last season’s huffing and
puffing, this year’s contest may more closely resemble “Who’s left standing?”
So if you don’t mind a bunch of
middle-aged, slow guys who can’t jump, dribble, shoot or play defense, this just might be the
game for you.
