FONTANA TO PRESENT ARCHEOLOGY LECTURE
Release Date: November 9, 2001
Dominic Fontana will reply to the question “What Sank the King’s
Favourite Ship?” at an archeology lecture Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Highlander Room in
Monmouth College’s Stockdale Center.
Sponsored by the Western Illinois Society of the Archeological
Institute of America (AIA), the lecture is free to the public.
Fontana, a professor from the University of Portsmouth in
England, will examine a Tudor naval engagement in 1545 that sank King Henry VIII’s warship,
the Mary Rose. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology is helping researchers
determine what happened to make the ship sink with tremendous loss of life in full view of the
king himself.
