FIRST HEARST SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED
Release Date: October 9, 2001
Sarah Koss and Dawn Gardner are the first recipients of Hearst Scholarships at Monmouth
College.
The new scholarship was made possible by a
grant received last year from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

Hearst Scholarships are given to incoming Monmouth College
students from rural communities with populations of 20,000 or less. Recipients must also have
unmet financial need.
Koss is a history major from Williamsfield and is minoring in
secondary education. Gardner, from Knoxville, is an elementary education major with an
emphasis on English. Both students are transfers from Carl Sandburg College.
“We are pleased with this vote of confidence from the Hearst
Foundation, as they receive many requests for assistance from fine colleges throughout the
nation,” said Monmouth College president Richard Giese. “The college will continue to be in a
strong position, with this grant, to be affordable to one of our chief constituencies, the
academically outstanding student from rural communities.”
