Thomas Loftus, who served as
the United States ambassador to Norway from 1993-97, will be on Monmouth College’s campus Oct.
29-Nov. 2 as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow.
A highlight of Loftus’ visit
will be his convocation address Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. in the college Auditorium. He will speak on
global reaction to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the impact those events are having
outside the United States. His talk is free and open to the public.
Loftus will also serve as a
guest lecturer in college classes on politics and international affairs throughout the week
and will be a guest on “The Talk of the Town Morning Show” Nov. 2 at 8:35 a.m. on radio
station WRAM, 1330 AM.
Prior to his ambassadorship,
Loftus was a member of the Wisconsin legislature from 1977-91 and was speaker of the house
from 1983-91. In 1990, he was Wisconsin’s Democratic nominee for governor. He later directed
WisKids Count, a foundation-funded study of the status of children in Wisconsin, and for the
past three years, he has served as special advisor to the World Health Organization.
The author of a book entitled
“The Art of Legislative Politics” (Congressional Quarterly, 1994), Loftus has assisted
parliaments in developing democracies in Hungary, Thailand, Pakistan, Latvia, Turkey and
Macedonia.
The Woodrow Wilson Visiting
Fellows Program brings leaders in their fields to the campuses of small liberal arts colleges
for a week of classes, informal discussions with students and faculty and career counseling.
Monmouth College hosts two Wilson Fellows each year, and Loftus is the 11th Wilson Fellow to
visit campus.
The visit is made possible by
a grant from The German Marshall Fund of the U.S. to the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship
Foundation. The fund was established in 1972 by a gift from the Federal Republic of Germany to
commemorate American postwar assistance under the Marshall Plan.
