The students are all members of the Tau Pi chapter of Mortar Board, Inc., a
national honor society that recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability in
scholarship, leadership and service. Founded in 1931 as a local society, Tau Pi became an
affiliate of Mortar Board in 1972.
Alumni from across the country are solicited each spring for contributions to
the scholarship fund, which was established in 1953 in memory of Margaret Stonebrook Brinker,
one of Tau Pi’s founders.
New members are tapped into Tau Pi in the spring of their junior
year. Mortar Board is distinguished from most honorary societies in that all members are
required to support the ideals of the society and be active participants in chapter
activities.
