MONMOUTH-KNOX 'TURKEY' GAME SCORES REAL THING FOR MONMOUTH
FOOD PANTRY
Release Date: November 14, 2001
Thanks to Monmouth and Knox
colleges, the Jamieson Community Center food pantry in Monmouth has additional canned goods
and 10 frozen turkeys for the holidays.

Knox president Roger Taylor made good on the bet he and
Monmouth College president Richard Giese made over last weekend’s Monmouth-Knox football game.
Taylor and an entourage of Knox employees and sorority members delivered the 10 turkeys, along
with the canned goods collected at the game, to the Jamieson Center on Wednesday.
The Fighting Scots of Monmouth retained the traveling turkey
trophy by defeating Knox 36-3. The trophy dates to 1928 and was inspired by the fact that the
two schools traditionally met on Thanksgiving.
“This friendly wager is an excellent way our two schools can
work together for the benefit of our communities,” said Giese.
Win or lose, the Jamieson Center was assured of a large
donation of canned goods according to Giese.
“This
is not the only contribution Monmouth College will have a hand in,” said Giese. “As has been
our tradition, our employees will be donating more canned goods to the Jamieson Center as part
of our annual Christmas party.”
The "Turkey Game" payoff netted the Jamieson Center literally a truckload of canned goods
which Giese also helped to unload. The Monmouth president also couldn’t resist displaying the
Bronze Turkey as an additional reminder as to the outcome of this year’s game.
The appearance of the Bronze Turkey led to a good-natured
impromptu attempt by a pair of Knox students to heist the bird, but the Monmouth president
thwarted the would-be kidnapping.
For now, the frozen turkeys belong to the
Jamieson Center, the Bronze Turkey belongs to Monmouth College.
