Monmouth College to Unveil 9-11 Memorial
Release Date: September 4, 2002
MONMOUTH, Ill. - Monmouth College will display part of a
permanent memorial to the victims of 9-11 at a special service commemorating the one-year
anniversary of the tragic events in New York, Washington, D.C., and western Pennsylvania.
The candlelight service will be held Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in
the natural amphitheater located just west of Wells Theater on the college campus.
Representatives of Monmouth's police and fire departments and the Warren County sheriff's
office have been invited to attend the event, which is open to the public.
A copper plaque, which will become part of a memorial on the
college campus, will be displayed for the first time. The gift of the Class of 2002, the
memorial will include the now-famous image of three New York firefighters raising a flag over
Ground Zero, along with an essay written by a member of the class. The plaque will be affixed
to a brick-and-cement base to be constructed near the flagpole in front of campus.
"Representatives of various campus groups have been invited
to say something about their organizations' contribution to living together as neighbors,
their service to the community or the importance of living with open minds and open hearts,"
said the Rev. Kathleen Fannin, the college chaplain, who organized the event with the help of
her student chaplains. "There will also be four or five readings from various faith traditions
having to do with peace and community."
At the end of the ceremony, candles will be lit, and there
will be moments of silence for those who died in the World Trade Center, in the Pentagon and
in the four airplanes. The Monmouth College Pipe Band will then play "Amazing Grace."
