Release Date: February 18, 2002
Rebecca
Disrud, a Monmouth College senior from Rolla, N.D., has been selected as one of five $4,500
scholarship winners in the Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) Liberal Arts for Leadership
Essay Contest.
The contest was held to celebrate ACI’s 50th
anniversary, demonstrating that the private liberal arts colleges and universities that
comprise its membership represent a critical leadership development resource for the 21st
century.
Seniors at the 24 ACI schools were asked to
write a 500-word essay on the topic “How has your liberal arts education helped develop your
leadership skills?” Disrud’s essay was judged to be one of the five most eloquent and
thoughtful entries.
An English and music major, Disrud has been
active as both a piano accompanist and vocalist for the Monmouth Chorale, a select vocal
ensemble.
“I wrote about how working as a section
leader in the Chorale both helped me to develop my leadership skills and exemplified the
experience of a liberal arts education by helping me to learn to draw connections among
disciplines,” said Disrud.
Her essay will be published in a
commemorative booklet and will be honored at the ACI’s 50th annual meeting on March 20.
