MC’s Fannin,
Students Complete Book
on Lenten Meditations
Release Date: March 5, 2002
The
Rev. B. Kathleen Fannin, Monmouth College chaplain, has written a book entitled “God at the
Center: A Lenten Meditation Guide for Students 2002.”
Completed in October of 2001, the book was
written, said Fannin, to “provide student-oriented spiritual guidance for Christian college
students across the country during Lent.”
Last April, the Higher Education Ministries
Arena, a consortium of seven Protestant denominations, invited Fannin to write the book, and
she enlisted the help of four Monmouth College student chaplains to compile the guide.
One
of those chaplains, John Huxtable, is a non-traditional student who is also serving as a lay
pastor at the Knoxville Presbyterian Church. Fannin and Huxtable met once a week throughout
the summer of 2001 to decide which scriptures would be used for the book. Other student
chaplains involved included Katie Mirsky, a junior from Hampshire; David Garrett, a senior
from New Baden; and Amanda Smith, a junior from Carol Stream. The students were all selected
by Fannin, and each completed three sections of the book.
“I just hope that people will enjoy reading
the meditations and that they will connect to some aspect of their life, making Lent a little
more relevant to them,” said Smith.
“So far, the feedback I have had from
students on campus is that they are reading the book and finding it very helpful.” said
Fannin. “I have also had feedback from a number of colleagues across the country who
subscribed to the daily meditations via e-mail. One of them is forwarding them to his
congregation on a daily basis.”
The book is available through the chaplain’s
office at 309-457-2380 or be e-mailing Fannin at
