MONMOUTH,
Ill. — Monmouth College will honor alumni, dedicate two campus facilities,
host a vocal concert and celebrate class reunions during Homecoming 2002,
Oct 11-13.
All Monmouth College alumni are invited to return
for the weekend, which will include special reunions for the classes of
’67, ’72, ’77, ’82, ’87, ’92, ’97 and 2001.
Homecoming events kick off Friday morning with a
meeting of the alumni board in the Tartan Room in the college’s Stockdale
Center. At 2 p.m. in the Finley Lecture Hall in the Haldeman-Thiessen
Science Center, college historian Jeff Rankin will present a slide lecture
about the 1903 disappearance of the college’s celebrated Civil War cannon.
At 3 p.m. there will be a dedication ceremony for the LeSuer Nature
Preserve, which is located next to the college’s Peacock Memorial Athletic
Park on North 11th Street.
At
4 p.m., Roger Fritz ’50 will be the 20th alumnus inducted into MC’s Hall
of Achievement at a ceremony in the Morgan Room in Poling Hall.
The Hall of Achievement, which is the highest
honor Monmouth College bestows upon its alumni, was established in 1993 to
honor the memory of Mr. And Mrs. Wendell F. Whiteman ’27 and his wife.
At 7 p.m., there will be a Fighting Scots’
volleyball match against Lake Forest in Glennie Gymnasium. Also that
evening, a wine and cheese reception for alumni will be held in the Rankin
Room of the Admissions/College Relations Building at 7:30 p.m., followed
by the traditional Homecoming pep rally at Bobby Woll Memorial Field at
8:30 p.m.
Saturday
begins with a new event, the first annual 5K Tartan Trot at Bobby Woll
Field. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the Tartan Trot will begin at
8 a.m. At 9 a.m., there will be interactive children’s games on the lawn
of Wallace Hall, followed by the Homecoming parade down East Broadway at
10 a.m.
After the parade, the dedication ceremony for the
renovated Hewes Library will commence, followed by reunion photos. Also,
carriage rides around campus will be available from 1-3:30 p.m. Those
events lead up to the 1:30 p.m. Homecoming football game against Grinnell
College. Pre-game festivities include members of the college’s Sound of
pop vocal ensemble from 1992 performing the national anthem. At halftime
of the football game, the
Monmouth College Pipe Band will perform and lead a
parade of alumni around the track.
In other athletic action, the Fighting Scots’
men’s soccer team will take on Illinois College at Peacock Park at 3 p.m.
Quinby House, home of President and Mrs. Richard
Giese, will be open to the public from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. It is located at
605 N. Sixth St.
Saturday evening activities include a free vocal
concert featuring the Monmouth College Chorale and the Monmouth Singers at
7:30 p.m. at Faith United Presbyterian Church, located at 200 S. Eighth
St.
Homecoming activities will conclude Sunday with a
noon golf outing at Gibson Woods Golf Course, open to alumni, students,
faculty and staff.
