MARKWART FEATURED IN AMERICAN ARTIST MAGAZINE
Release Date: January 31, 2002
Carla Markwart, a lecturer in painting and
drawing at Monmouth College, is featured in an article in the January issue of American Artist
magazine, a journal that features artists and their paintings, drawings and sculptures.
Markwart, an oil painter, currently has
several works on display in the art gallery at the Galesburg Antique Mall. Those paintings, as
well as some of Markwart’s charcoal sketches, are featured in the article. All of the featured
paintings and sketches portray Galesburg scenes.
“I look for things that are familiar and
ordinary,” Markwart recently told a reporter. “It’s more interesting to me to paint the
mundane. I think the act of painting transforms something and honors it. There is a beauty of
life all around us.”
Although she focuses mostly on landscapes,
Markwart has done some portrait work, as well as commissioned paintings and drawings of local
homes. Currently she is working on a portrait of Judge Harry Bulkeley portraying General
Ulysses S. Grant in Civil War attire.
