V-Day Presentation Targets Violence Against Women
Release Date: February 8, 2002
“V-Day,” a college campaign dedicated to stopping violence
against women of all ages, has found its way to Monmouth. Through the campaign, Eve Ensler’s
“The Vagina Monologues” will be performed Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Wells
Theater.
The show features a series of monologues created by women who
have encountered different sexual experiences, both good and bad. Crimson Masque, the
Coalition for Women’s Awareness and PRISM have all played a role in helping Monmouth host the
production, which will be directed by sophomore Amanda Caldwell and supervised by
assistant professor Trudi Peterson.
“The purpose of staging a production of ‘The Vagina
Monologues’ is educational,” Peterson told The Courier newspaper. “Many myths and
misconceptions prevent people from understanding the experiences of women who have endured
violence directed against them. Learning about and validating women’s experiences can help us
all understand the realities of women’s lives, so we may learn how to prevent such violence.
Many people are unaware of the prevalence of violence against women.”
Tickets are $4 for students and $5 for the general public.
All proceeds will go to support the campaign against violence toward women, with 90 percent
being donated to a battered women’s shelter in Galesburg and 10 percent going to a relief fund
to help the women of Afghanistan.
