MONMOUTH, Ill. — An exhibition
featuring the works of three Monmouth College senior art majors will
go on display March 26 in the college’s Len G. Everett Gallery in
Hewes Library. On March 28 at 6 p.m., there will be a reception,
open to the public, for the artists.
According to Marjorie Blackwell,
assistant professor of art, the annual senior art exhibition, a
long-standing art department tradition, brings together a wide variety of
pieces. She said this year because of the volume and complexity of the
student artwork, the exhibition will actually be held in two different
stages featuring two separate sets of student artists. The first phase
will close April 4 and the second phase will open April 16.
Artists featured in the first phase of
the exhibition are Roy Callaway and Dustin Scott, both of Galesburg, and
Matthew Mabee of Ripon, Wis.
Blackwell said Callaway’s paintings are
based on his silhouette and deal with thoughts and emotions and situations
through graphic color relationships. Some of his work is painted
realistically while some is done in a graphic mode. The latter technique
grew from his studies of graphic design in history and how shapes and
colors were used to convey information.
Scott’s sculpture deals with issues of
spirituality. One piece, in particular, represents tribal/community
worship, and another addresses the relationship between the artist, or
mankind, and a higher being. He uses various materials, including steel,
bronze and concrete.
Mabee’s works consist primarily of
architectural sculpture. Using such materials as metal and wood, he has
created a miniature city.
The gallery is open during regular
library hours: Sunday, 1 p.m. to midnight; Mondays through Thursdays, 8
a.m. to midnight; Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5
p.m.
